As long as you breathe, you live. No breath, no life. Breathing takes place automatically, but it can also be controlled, regulated and directed at will. It is therefore both a voluntary and an involuntary function.

Proper breathing and good health are inter-related. Normally, children breathe well, with their abdomen. As they grow up and become adults, they lose or give up effective breathing due to their wrong body postures or due to stress, tension, or depression. Most people unknowingly get used to shallow breathing, which does not involve the abdomen. They do not fully utilize the potential of their lungs. They use only the upper and the middle portion of the lungs. That is, they use mainly the chest, but not the entire volume of the lungs during shallow breathing, which is not the most effective way to breathe for good health.

Breathing correctly ensures maintenance of good health. To breathe naturally and correctly for health and fitness, you must replace chest breathing with diaphragmatic and belly breathing. In superficial or shallow breathing, the diaphragm moves very little, because of which the supply of oxygen to the vital organs like the brain and the several other cells in the body remains insufficient. This is the root cause of poor health. If you breathe properly, involving the diaphragm and the abdomen, if you utilize the entire lung-volume, the oxygen exchange that happens in the lungs becomes efficient, slowing the heart rate and reducing the blood pressure. As a result, you feel relaxed, your anxiety levels fall, and you experience calmness of the mind. Slow and deep belly breathing relieves you of your stress and bestows upon you untold health benefits.

Proper breathing exercises, which are slow deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing exercises, boost your metabolism. That means your weight can be put under control through good breathing practices. Because of good breathing, your lung muscles become more elastic and allow better oxygen absorption, the immune system gets strengthened, and the levels of anxiety, tension and stress get reduced. Your overall health, both physical and mental, improves considerably.

There are certain precautions you have to take before practicing breathing exercises. If you have any respiratory or heart problems, it is essential for you to consult and take your doctor’s advice. When the atmosphere is polluted, avoid doing breathing exercises in the contaminated or impure air. This is so even if the air is filled with something like incense smoke. If the atmospheric temperature is too hot or too cold, it is not suitable for breathing exercises. Do not wear any tight dress or waist-belt that does not allow the free movement of the abdomen during the breathing exercises.

Although we normally breathe through our nose and not the mouth, some breathing exercises involve mouth breathing as well. Experts believe that nasal breathing raises the levels of energy in the body. However, if you are doing vigorous physical exercises like aerobics, jogging, running, swimming or weight lifting, it is natural for you to breathe through the mouth.

Learning correct breathing techniques for normal and natural breathing that promotes good health and keeps your weight in check. Practice suitable breathing exercises regularly and you will increase your energy levels and lead a long and healthy life.

That familiar saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” sounds so positive and good. Yet there’s so much talk today about fitness programs, weight loss and beauty treatments, that it makes you wonder if that old saying is true or not. To help clear up this triangle of what real beauty is all about, this report will discuss what the real beauties are doing with regards to fitness clubs, weight loss programs and beauty treatments.

Note that this report is for educational purposes only. None of the information is intended to take the place of your physician’s advice. So consult your family doctor or other medical authority for that and other pertinent help.

Fitness Overview
Many believe that beauty is being as healthy and fit as possible – both physically and mentally – even if you don’t look like a movie star. Yet reports today show that a lack of even the most basic exercise and physical fitness is the main reason that there is an increasing rise in obesity cases plus other serious health issue including type 2 diabetes that can result from inactivity combined with obesity promote insulin resistance.

In fact reports for the population of the United States alone show that about a quarter of the adults are simply inactive due to increasing numbers having sedentary jobs and work that results in using computers more and more every day. And about only a third of the adults actually get the recommended minimal 30 minutes of activity each day.

Now although fitness might be seen by many as a tool for keeping bodies in shape and beautiful on the outside, it is necessary first and foremost as a tool for keeping bodies beautiful on the side. Exercise and other physical fitness activities help fight cardiovascular disease, a number one killer among men and women today, by lowering blood glucose levels and improving your overall health.

Get a Move On….
On a more positive note, physical fitness activities can be started and increased at any time, any age, of course with the approval of your healthcare provider. The benefits of increased activity can include improved circulation in your body’s systems, weight loss, improved glucose levels and heart functions, improved mental activity and alertness and overall positive self improvement both physically and mentally. Then your inner beauty will show on the outside with smiles, a bounce in your step and happiness radiating outwards.

Begin by adding a little daily activity to your plans. Take your dog for a walk; take your neighbor’s dog for a walk. Ride your bike to the post office, public library or bank for errands. Plan activities with family and friends on days off and weekends.
There’s no need to join a gym or health club. But if your budget and time allow, check around your area to see what’s offered. Compare hours of operation, parking conditions (for safety if you go there at night), equipment and classes, etc. Then maybe go slow and steady, signing up for a class first, then part time with day or evening hours, before jumping aboard with a full-time membership.

If you are specifically looking for weight loss programs, check out dieting packages available today. Key in a phrase like “weight loss programs” into search engines for help and you can find over 21 million listings in Google™ alone.

One popular place to search online is eDiets.com. They offer an extensive network of informative articles on fitness and diet. Their site features a recipe club, an online journal and fitness diary, fitness coach and exercise tools and help, variety of diet plans with top diet programs on the market today. So teaming up with eDiets can also mean teaming up with Bill Phillips Eating for Life, Suzanne Sommers Weight Loss Plan, The Mayo Clinic Plan, Slim Fast®, Atkins® diet or others. Learn more by contacting them at: eDiets.com, 1000 Corporate Drive, Suite 600, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33334. Call their toll-free Nutrition Support at: (800) 265-6170 or email their Nutrition Support at: nutrition@ediets.com.

The low-Down on Dieting and Weight Loss …
If you’re tired of trying this program and that, stop and take a time to learn the low down on what diet and nutrition and weight loss are all about. Start your research with the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) website: http://www.mypyramid.gov with their USDA Food Guide Pyramid and physical activity level assessment help and tool.
The Pyramid presents a basics outline of the foods you should eat daily, based upon the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It shows that a wide variety of foods is needed so that your body gets the necessary calories and nutrients to be healthy. And the amount and size of servings depend upon age groups and gender. So learn and burn – calories, that is!

Real Beauty
Time to check out the third corner of our triangle, real or natural beauty. The most physical outward beauty of any one person can be destroyed by the ugliness inside. And that’s a fact, as ugly as it sounds.

Take the most beautiful Hollywood stars, that end up porn stars hooked on drugs and anything and everything else… and those people generally end up destroying themselves with their negative habits and lifestyles, often committing suicide. That’s not real beauty.
Real beauty comes from within, regardless of the dressing on the outside, the background, socio-economic status, etc. Real beauty starts with the heart and mind of the individual and grows outward from there with smiles and gestures, thoughts and actions – all reflecting the inner beauty.

There is no price tag on real beauty. It’s priceless. It’s all too rare sometimes.
For those seeking real beauty, start inside and seek inner peace during quite times. Many find this a type of spiritual awakening and seek help with the process with mentor or spiritual guidance. Also combine basic grooming skills and tasks to cover external beauty coverage.

Basic Grooming
Begin by focusing on cleanliness, like that old say, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” A daily bath or shower makes for a good smelling person. But don’t overdo the good effect by dousing yourself in cologne or perfume, no matter how much it costs. A good, clean scent is far better than one that makes people sneeze and need sinus medicine to breathe around you. And in the event you cannot get a shower or bath daily, at least sponge bathing and putting on a fresh shirt with deodorant can help.

Attire should be cleaned and neat. You don’t need expensive or even new clothing to look good. Rather have your clothing mended or repaired if there are whole or seems torn, etc. And have the wrinkles out, stains spotted cleaned out, etc. Shoes needn’t be shiny and new, either, but look the best they can with a damp cloth taken over them.

Now head to toe, let’s groom!
Hair is such a personal feature. Some like it long; some like it short; some shave it off. Some like it blond; some like it brunette; some like it red; and still others prefer it green, purple or another color. Then there are those who wear it up with ribbons, hair combs, pulled back in a bun, tied in braids, tied in a ponytail (for gents, too).

Regardless of hair length, color, type or style, make sure to keep it clean – scalp included. Again, there’s no need for fancy, pricey shampoos, conditioners and other hair treatments here. Simply select a basic shampoo and conditioner and wash, rinse and repeat every couple days.

About deodorant – -wear some – and daily. Enough said.
Nails need trimmed for gals and guys. No one likes to see long nails on men; and women don’t need long claws – so don’t look for moms to remind you of clippings. Learn when to feel the need to clip your nails and do it regularly. For those choosing to use colored polishes, keep them up as they begin chipping or remove polish to detract attention.

Shaving is obviously a choice for the ladies, even with swim wear. But for either gender, choose a gentle shaving system or cream to remove unwanted hair. And check into electrolysis for long-term solutions.

Don’t forget your teeth when grooming! Cleaning teeth after every meal helps with long-term dental care – along with an apple a day to keep the doctor away. So choose toothpaste with fluoride – and whiteners as you age, if possible, and brush regularly. Remember to change toothbrushes regularly, too. A genuine smile shows real beauty!

For more tips on real beauty, check out library books on etiquette and manners. Learn to relax, have self confidence and poise and walk the talk. That’s real beauty, regardless of your weight and physical looks.

In order to lose weight it is essential that you eat fewer calories and that you burn off the excess of your recommended daily allowance each and every day. This means that you should stick to a sensible calorie controlled diet with sensible portion sizes while exercising and being active enough to burn off the food that you are taking in. However, when it comes to counting calories many people on or starting a diet have very little idea as to how many calories is the right amount. So how do you calculate how many calories are needed in your daily diet in order for you to stick to a sensible diet that allows you to lose weight?

The easiest way to do this and determine how many calories are needed is by assessing your calorie need by doing simple math and following the Harris-Benedict formula. This formula gives you your basal metabolic rate; this is the amount that your body will burn off the calories that you take in and is a good estimation as to how calories you should have per day.

Calculating your BMR
Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy that your body needs in order to function properly. Think of your body as being like a car needing gas in order to get you from place to place and for it to stop running out of gas and coming to a standstill. It can be surprising what we use the calories for, for example just breathing and other similar functions will use up around 60% of the calories that we ingest throughout the day. Other factors that have to be taken into account when figuring out what your BMR are your age, your gender, height and weight.

When calculating your BMR this is the formula that you should follow and it is different for both men and women, this formula also should only be applied to adults.
For women the formula is 655 + (4.3 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years)
For men the formula is 66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years)

Step two of the calculation is based upon the amount of activity that you do, this will then lead to your BMR score and the amount of calories that you need per day.
If you don’t take exercise on a regular basis then BMR x 20%
If you take part in light exercise then BMR x 30%
If you exercise intently almost everyday then BMR x 50%
For those people who workout say in competition for sports or who have very demanding physical jobs then BMR x 60%
It is important that as you lose weight on your diet you should take this into account and recalculate using this formula in order to find your new BMR.

The number that you get from this formula is the number of calories that should be eaten on a daily basis in order to remain the same weight as you are. If you want to lose weight then you will need to eat fewer calories than the formula suggests.

Time to test your fitness knowledge! See how you stand up under pressure with these statements. Are they fact…or fiction?

Weight training isn’t good for women. It makes them bulk up and look like the Arnold Schwarzenegger contest competitors.

Unfortunately many trainers still preach this and it just isn’t so. Although most women probably do not want to have that professional body-building bulk, they wouldn’t get it with the basic weight lifting anyway that was added into their fitness routines. And science and medicine support this.

What happens is that there are physiological differences between men and women, and men on the whole have a higher percentage of muscle in their bodies. So men build up bulk with their weight lifting. However, women have a greater percentage of fat for aiding in child birth, lesser percentage of muscle – so less to bulk up. The reason why weight training is important for women is so that the muscles become stronger, bulkier.

Protein shakes, bars and other foodstuffs will help build muscles.
Health bars, shakes, snacks and other healthy foodstuffs are great. But heads up, protein is wonderful for your diet, but it doesn’t help you increase you build muscle strength. In fact, too much protein can lead to health problems like dehydration or kidney strain, not to mention extra pounds.

If you want to build muscles, one of the best sources of fuel for this is carbohydrates. They are easy to digest and offer fast, constant energy for your body. Thus you will be able to lift weights longer or endure, which in itself builds strength.

No pain, no gain!
People push themselves with their fitness programs often because they hear this saying all over. Truth is, this is fiction. In fact, exercise that is done correctly should not be painful.
Professional trainers even tell their clients to stop working out when they first feel pain. Otherwise, working out, you could actually hurt yourself and sustain in injury.
The bottom line here is that discomfort is one thing and OK. However, pain is NOT ok.

You Should Exercise First Thing in the Morning Before You Eat
This sounds like sound advice so that you begin by burning off the fat you have stored. However, it’s fiction. The truth is your body needs to have energy for exercising, and you need to provide some fuel for it to avoid getting dizzy. So grab at least a light breakfast like a piece of fresh fruit before rushing off to the gym.
