Pregnancy tests have been around for centuries. Even the ancient Egyptians used a test in which a woman would urinate on some grain. If it grew, a woman was pregnant. If not, she was not expecting. Modern scientists have even discovered some validity to this test, but today’s pregnancy tests have evolved significantly.
One of the most popular is the First Response Early Results Test early results.

The First Response Test has many qualities that attract women. The greatest of these is the short time between conception and the ability of the First Response Test to indicate a pregnancy. This test is capable of revealing a woman’s pregnancy about four days before she misses her first period.

Like most other pregnancy tests, the First Response Test measures the amount of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine. Higher amounts of this hormone indicate that a woman is pregnant.

The First Response Test comes with a plastic stick with a tip that absorbs the urine to be tested. It also has a unique grip at the opposite end for easy maneuverability. The manufacturers recommend that a woman use the first urine of the day because it is more highly concentrated. The woman may urinate on the strip or into a cup and then dip the stick.

The First Response Test results will appear in three minutes. Two pink lines in the window of the test unit indicate that conception has taken place. One pink line tells the woman that she is not pregnant. If at least one pink line does not appear in the clear window, the woman has made an error and should take another test.

Studies using a control group have shown that 98.4% of the women who used the test had accurate results from it. Technicians who were used to working with the First Response Test had even better results. They had an accurate prediction rate of 99%.

The First Response Test is not affected by most drugs. These include birth control pills, antibiotics, and narcotics. Alcohol also has no influence on the results. Any medication containing the hormone hCG will affect the First Response Test results.

Several dental devices for sleep apnea exist to treat the sleep disorder. Dental devices for sleep apnea generally come in two categories, either mandibular advance devices or tongue retraining devices. A variety of both style dental devices for sleep apnea exists, each with advantages and disadvantages.

Dental devices for sleep apnea in the mandibular advance device variety essentially consist of a plastic or other flexible material mold of the teeth. These dental devices for sleep apnea resemble the athletic mouth guards commonly used in boxing, football, and other contact sports. The mold for the lower teeth is advanced further forward than the mold for the upper teeth. Moving forward the lower teeth moves the jawbone forward as well and opens the airway, preventing its collapse during sleep that causes the apnea episodes. It is an effective dental device for sleep apnea in mild cases of obstructive sleep apnea, particularly if the patient’s obstructive sleep apnea is positional.

Tongue-retaining dental devices for sleep apnea also resemble an athletic mouth guard. The device is like a suction cup and is placed between the upper and lower teeth. The tongue sits in the suction device and is pulled forward during the night, preventing the sleep apnea episodes. Positioning the tongue forward may eliminate any obstruction caused by the base of the tongue, and a sleep study can help determine if the tongue is causing the airway obstruction.

There is limited overall experience with either of these dental devices for sleep apnea, compared with the other treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. They appear to be most useful in treating mild cases of obstructive sleep apnea. They are best fitted by a dentist experienced in the use of dental devices for sleep apnea treatment. Complications associated with them include temporal mandibular joint pain and excessive salivation. In addition, some patients find it difficult to sleep while wearing the devices.

Rheumatism comes from the Latin word, rheum, meaning “to suffer from rheum – flow, watery discharge from the body which causes aches and pains” (source: Dictionary.com).

Rheumatoid arthritis is considered an autoimmune disease because is causes chronic (on-going) inflammation of the joints. Additionally, rheumatoid arthritis can cause the tissues that surround the joints or other body organs, to become inflamed.

Autoimmune disease is oftentimes referred to as a group of diseases which cause the immune system to attack itself. This is caused by an over-production of cytokines. Cytokines send signals to the brain, which are used to allow one cell to communicate with another.

Certain foods are known to cause an over-production of cytokines. Eliminating these cytokine-producing foods can help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers better manage their symptoms by reducing inflammation within the body.

At present, no one knows the exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis. Some scientists believe is it linked to genetics; while others claim that infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi are the root of the problem.

Recent scientific research suggests that certain infections or environmental factors trigger autoimmune disease. Scientists have reported that smoking or chewing tobacco increases the risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Studies have shown that rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can be better managed through diet and exercise. Foods known to increase cytokine production and increase inflammation include:

v Most meat, except oily fish
v Dairy products (milk, ice cream, cheese)
v Egg yolks
v Gluten (found in wheat, oats, barley and rye)
v Corn, corn oil, and corn syrup
v Sugar, flour and processed foods
v Nightshade vegetables (white potatoes, tomatoes, all peppers, cherries, tobacco, and eggplants)
v Coffee and Alcohol

Changing your diet to include fresh, whole fruits and vegetables, grains, and essential fatty acids can significantly improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Additionally, adding dietary supplements (vitamins and minerals); can further assist in reducing inflammation and pain.

Engage in gentle exercises such as tai chi, or water aerobics. It’s recommended to consult with your healthcare practitioner before engaging in a new exercise program. Ask your physician for recommendations or consult with a certified professional exercise trainer.

Although Rheumatoid Arthritis can be a chronic and oftentimes painful disease, there are many actions you can take to minimize the pain associated with this disease. In addition to obtaining information from your doctor, you can find many helpful resources via the Internet or through your local library.

As long as you breathe, you live. No breath, no life. Breathing takes place automatically, but it can also be controlled, regulated and directed at will. It is therefore both a voluntary and an involuntary function.

Proper breathing and good health are inter-related. Normally, children breathe well, with their abdomen. As they grow up and become adults, they lose or give up effective breathing due to their wrong body postures or due to stress, tension, or depression. Most people unknowingly get used to shallow breathing, which does not involve the abdomen. They do not fully utilize the potential of their lungs. They use only the upper and the middle portion of the lungs. That is, they use mainly the chest, but not the entire volume of the lungs during shallow breathing, which is not the most effective way to breathe for good health.

Breathing correctly ensures maintenance of good health. To breathe naturally and correctly for health and fitness, you must replace chest breathing with diaphragmatic and belly breathing. In superficial or shallow breathing, the diaphragm moves very little, because of which the supply of oxygen to the vital organs like the brain and the several other cells in the body remains insufficient. This is the root cause of poor health. If you breathe properly, involving the diaphragm and the abdomen, if you utilize the entire lung-volume, the oxygen exchange that happens in the lungs becomes efficient, slowing the heart rate and reducing the blood pressure. As a result, you feel relaxed, your anxiety levels fall, and you experience calmness of the mind. Slow and deep belly breathing relieves you of your stress and bestows upon you untold health benefits.

Proper breathing exercises, which are slow deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing exercises, boost your metabolism. That means your weight can be put under control through good breathing practices. Because of good breathing, your lung muscles become more elastic and allow better oxygen absorption, the immune system gets strengthened, and the levels of anxiety, tension and stress get reduced. Your overall health, both physical and mental, improves considerably.

There are certain precautions you have to take before practicing breathing exercises. If you have any respiratory or heart problems, it is essential for you to consult and take your doctor’s advice. When the atmosphere is polluted, avoid doing breathing exercises in the contaminated or impure air. This is so even if the air is filled with something like incense smoke. If the atmospheric temperature is too hot or too cold, it is not suitable for breathing exercises. Do not wear any tight dress or waist-belt that does not allow the free movement of the abdomen during the breathing exercises.

Although we normally breathe through our nose and not the mouth, some breathing exercises involve mouth breathing as well. Experts believe that nasal breathing raises the levels of energy in the body. However, if you are doing vigorous physical exercises like aerobics, jogging, running, swimming or weight lifting, it is natural for you to breathe through the mouth.

Learning correct breathing techniques for normal and natural breathing that promotes good health and keeps your weight in check. Practice suitable breathing exercises regularly and you will increase your energy levels and lead a long and healthy life.

We all breathe – of course – that’s what keeps us alive. However, the majority of us never stop to give breathing a second thought, its just there. There is a right way and wrong way to breathe and it has an astonishing affect on our health and overall well being, if we breathe the correct way. Breath awareness or conscious breathing can make us feel happier, healthier and more in control over our bodies and life and anyone can start benefiting from using it.

Conscious breathing is all about being more aware of your body sensations. Since we all have to breathe continually we are able to practice conscious breathing during every waking moment of our lives until it becomes the norm.

Learning how to breathe consciously
Learning how to breathe consciously is not hard; in essence it is nothing more than being aware of the breath entering your body through your nose and the sensations of it leaving your body through your mouth. One important point to note when making the transition to conscious breathing is that you shouldn’t make any changes to your breathing.

When first starting out don’t think about slowing the breathing down or speeding it up, the whole idea is to be aware of your breathing, this is all at this time. Staying relaxed and learning how to focus on your breathing is the most important thing at this stage, once you have learned to be comfortable and are consciously breathing as a normal reaction you can then delve deeper into conscious breathing and its effects.

This is the basis behind breathing this natural way and occurs differently in all people. For example you might feel more natural and relaxed if you focus on the sensations you feel in your nostrils as you breathe air in through them. Others might concentrate more on the feelings and sensations of the rise and fall of the rib cage and abdomen. Focus on the one that feels right or comfortable for you.

Build your focus
For those who have trouble focusing on anything for any length of time then the sensations felt around the nostrils and upper lip might be better. These sensations are only small and subtle and so require greater focus, which can help to keep the mind on the task at hand. For those who can focus relatively easy then choosing to watch and feel the movements in the abdomen might be more satisfying.

Having an overall awareness of breathing gives us a backdrop to our everyday life and allows us to practice conscious breathing no matter where we are or what we are doing. Of course your focus can shift depending on what you are doing as the whole process should feel natural at all times.

Conscious breathing is a powerful tool that we all carry with us in our day-to-day life and can be used continually in all situations. It is a natural way to center yourself and find peace and harmony in yourself while also bringing about health benefits.

Before going into the actual reason for Male urinary incontinence, let us have an overview on what urinary incontinence is. When someone is suffering from urinary incontinence it means that he or she has loss all the control over urine. It is more common in women, since the reported number of male patients is less. In the United States, around 5 million men are prone to this kind of problem.

The causes of urinary incontinence will also tell you whether this condition is temporary or permanent. Let us see why this problem occurs in men. If there are any prostate abnormalities in your body it may lead to urinary incontinence. This will also happen in case your prostrate is removed surgically which is called total prostatectomy. If you have suffered from any trauma or disease which has affected your head or spinal cord, the proper signals may not be sent to the urinary bladder. Thus, it leads to loss of urine control. In case, a person is suffering from neurological diseases, Parkinson’s disease or Multiple Sclerosis, you may lose control over your urine.

You also need to check if you have urinary infection. Urinary incontinence indicated that the condition of urinary infection is the worst. This can be treated by taking antibiotics. You will also face this problem if you are ageing. Just as you grow old, so does your body parts. An elderly person may lose sense of time and space. They fail to remember dates and days. Similarly body parts cannot perform their functions well if they are ageing. If you are someone who indulges in too much of alcohol, you are likely to suffer urinary incontinence. If your body is taking up toxins on a regular basis, it affects the functions of the body and consequently the passing of urine.

If you are taking medicines everyday especially sedative drugs, it leads to loss of control over passing urine. Such medicines should be taken under medical supervision and in the recommended doses. People suffering from mental depression or illness are also prone to urinary incontinence.

The several types of urinary incontinence are Urge incontinence, Stress incontinence, Overflow incontinence and Functional incontinence. Urge continence is seen in people who suffer from Parkinson’s disease, stroke etc. in case of Overflow incontinence the bladder is full of urine and can hold no more. Hence it bursts and urine leaks out. Stress incontinence happens when bladder experiences pressure due to coughing, laughing, picking something heavy etc. The treatment depends on the type of urinary incontinence you are suffering from.

Most Alzheimer’s patients are banging their heads to find out the answer for one of the most common questions – Can vitamins help prevent Alzheimer’s disease? For the benefit of these sufferers, a study was conducted in Johns Hopkins University to study the progress of Alzheimer’s disease. The results did suggest that the Alzheimer patients who consumed vitamins C and E together might slow down the progress of Alzheimer’s disease.

There is always hope that there is a cure out there, and this holds true for Alzheimer’s too. This dreadful disease robs millions of people of their lives and memories. As prevention is better than cure, you can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by adopting some simple measure that will be discussed in this article.

Effects of Alzheimer’s
A great number of our senior citizens in nursing facilities have Alzheimer’s disease. The main action of this disease is that it will shut down the short-term portion of the brain. The typical Alzheimer patient may forget the name of their children but will remember people and events from their childhood.

After 20 years of age, the human brain cells start to pass away at a rate of about 9000 per day. For this reason, scientists have been testing the effects of vitamins on the human brain. Vitamins C and E seem to offer the most benefit .

The antioxidant vitamin supplements
Vitamin C and E are building blocks of good health and may protect the aging brain from Alzheimer’s disease. A healthy body will secrete enough Vitamin C and E to defend the brain from injury from free radicals. Both of these vitamins have proven helpful in numerous health conditions including stress, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

In order to help protect your brain from damage, you must include a sufficient amount of antioxidant vitamins to help control Alzheimer’s. The amount of vitamins needed to help prevent Alzheimer’s varies for each individual based on several factors including genetics and diet. Typically, if you were to include 500 milligrams of vitamin C and 500 milligrams of vitamin E daily with your diet, you may help protect your brain cells from early destruction, and therefore, Alzheimer’s.

It is evident through the many studies performed that vitamins E and C may offer a defense against Alzheimer’s disease when consumed in combination. However, when vitamin E is combined with the lower doses of vitamin C found in multivitamins, there is little protective effect for brain. You must take large doses of both to get the desired effects.

Other vitamins to consider
In addition to these vitamins, there are two other substances that your body needs a healthy amount of to ward off Alzheimer’s, vitamin B and homocysteine. Low B vitamin and high homocysteine may lead to Alzheimers disease. Food sources that are rich in Vitamins B6, B12, and folate such as leafy green vegetables, spinach, chickenpeas, lentils, and asparagus should be included in your diet. Excess homocysteine will be metabolized by Vitamin B6, B12 and folate. Consumption of the food sources rich in these nutrients may minimize the occurrence of the Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, in the US, found that eight studies indicated that having a high BMI (body mass index ) increased symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease They found that being overweight increased the odds of having Acid Reflux symptoms by 50 percent when compared to having a normal weight. Being obese was not good news at all.

In 2006, a Dr. B Jacobson, from Boston University School of Medicine, USA, showed that any excess weight might have a negative effect on digestive health. A person of normal weight who gained just a bit of weight , still looked fine , and was not obese could still become more prone to Acid Reflux Disease. Conversely, if a person suddenly noticed his/her Acid Reflux symptoms become more severe, losing a few pounds could help alleviate the symptoms

So why does obesity matter?

Imagine layers and layers of excess body fat compressing the stomach, pushing it in, localizing and trapping stomach acids in little natural enclosures in the stomach folds so formed. Then the effects of indiscriminately imbibed food, and resultant hernias. And we are still not considering the hormonal modifications going on in the body that cause your obesity, and possibly, some problems in most of your body functions, like digestion.

Today, 20 percent of Americans suffer from recurring Acid Reflux disease, or GERD. This Acid Reflux then interferes with eating, sleeping, and daily living. Obesity, being almost an epidemic in America today further adds to this percentage, and consequently it has been found to put people at risk for complication and certain cancers including cancer of the esophagus.

Obese people tend to have weaker esophageal sphincters, and they more often develop a condition related to Acid Reflux called hiatal hernia, in which the upper part of the stomach protrudes above the diaphragm. Think about that. There is limited space and there is so much, to fit in. No wonder some folds become permanent hernias.

An associated point of concern for obese folks suffering from Acid Reflux is that even if they undergo weight loss surgery, research indicates that, at that point, the Acid Reflux, sometimes, even gets worse. Currently, there are conflicting opinions about the possibility of treating a bad case of Acid Reflux in an obese individual, through surgery. The Jury is out on that one.

What seems to be very clear is that obesity increases pressure in the abdomen, and causes the contents of the stomach to swish back into the food pipe. Obesity, indirectly leads to slowing of movement and less exercise, and basically loss of various muscle tones. The Esophageal Sphincter could possibly be among those affected.

There can be various reasons why we suffer from diarrhea; one reason is the body’s natural defense system ridding the body of toxins and unwanted substances. Other reasons include an allergy to something, eating contaminated food, a bacterial or viral infection or some people find themselves constantly running to the toilet with nerves.

While nothing really cures diarrhea there are some medicines that can help to relieve the symptoms and stress that are brought with condition. Along with drinking plenty of fluids you could try herbal remedies as relievers, if the problem is particularly troublesome.

Here are some of the most herbal remedies that can be used if you are suffering.
Argentum nitricum can be helpful to take if you are suffering the problem due to nerves, particularly if you anticipating stressful events such as exams, going to an interview or preparing to make a public speech. It is known to calm the stomach and the nerves that in this case cause diarrhea.

Bryonia may be helpful if the diarrhea occurs as a symptom of heatstroke. This should be taken along with plenty of fluid, preferably cold water. If you are suffering from this type of diarrhea, the mouth may be very dry and the symptoms worse, first thing on waking.

Chamommila is used in the relief of diarrhea that is accompanied by pains in the abdomen and gas. It is not unusual for the person suffering to feel hot and even be flushed in the face.

Colocynthis can help to relieve cramping pains in the stomach that are felt before the diarrhea begins. Usually relief can be felt if you bend over or put pressure directly onto the abdomen.

Ipecacuanha can bring relief if the diarrhea is accompanied by nausea or vomiting, it also helps with pains that are felt around the navel.
Phosphorus can be soothing if you have that empty stomach feeling after watery diarrhea, very often the person will have an intense thirst when affected this way.

Pulsatilla can help if the attack of diarrhea is brought on after you have eaten rich or fatty foods. If this is the case then the person will usually have nausea and pains in the abdomen to accompany the diarrhea.

Sulphur can be a relief for diarrhea that occurs first thing in the morning particularly if the anus is itchy, sore, red or swollen.

Although herbal remedies are made from plants and natural ingredients, care should be taken when diagnosing your illness and self-prescribing. Most of the over the counter remedies will of course include instructions for dosage and these should be followed carefully.

When using herbal remedies you are usually advised to take a dose of the treatment and wait for it to take effect, if you see some improvement in your condition then give the remedy time to do its thing. However if no improvement is seen then another dose may be taken providing your symptoms or illness doesn’t get drastically worse. The type of remedy you use will depend on how frequently you are supposed to take it throughout the day; certain remedies require only one dose daily while others require you to take it several times during the course of 1 hour.

Cannabis has been used for medical reasons for thousands of years, over 4000 years ago medical uses were noted in literature written by a Chinese emperor, and in the 18th century cannabis was noted as being used as a medicine in the Susruta of India. However in present times cannabis is still used for medical reasons with the most popular uses being in the treatment of pain, nausea and MS. The medical use of cannabis is something which is continuing to be debated, but one fact remains in its favor, that while people claim is does help them with the symptoms of various illness there is no real evidence that it causes them any harm. Here we take a look at some of the most common illnesses which cannabis is used for in medicinal purposes.

Although cannabis is not used to cure any illness the use of it thought to alleviate a number of symptoms for a wide variety of illnesses, particularly many serious illnesses where the sufferer is very uncomfortable or is in a lot of pain either due to the illness or treatment given for the illness. Very few studies have been made into the medicinal uses of cannabis but rather it relies on reports given to doctors by patients who have tried everything else and have turned to the use of cannabis as a last resort. However one report did suggest that around 44% of doctors privately recommended the use of cannabis in seriously ill patients with specified illnesses, simply due to the fact that is was the best medication for their particular illness.
The majority of people who use cannabis for medical reasons take the drug by smoking it, this is due to the fact that this is the quickest acting method and gives the quickest relief. The leaves and seeds of the plant however are also used and these are used to make tea. It is also available for medical use in capsules and essential oils.

Those suffering from the debilitating symptoms of the Aids virus have found cannabis to be particular effective. Aids brings about many difficult symptoms as part of the illness and the illnesses progression, in California over 60% of the people who requested to use cannabis for medicinal purposes last year did so due to the Aids virus.

Glaucoma is a condition where traditional treatment has unpleasant or dangerous side effects, due to this fact alone many people have turned to using cannabis which lowers the pressure in end stage glaucoma dramatically with very little side effects which are associated with traditional treatment.

In patients who have cancer, cannabis has been used to successfully alleviate pain and nausea particularly when having treatment by chemotherapy.

Those who suffer from pain and tremor with multiple sclerosis have reported relief from both symptoms and in the cases of severe epileptic seizures; cannabis has been used to effectively control seizures.

Along with serious illnesses and medical conditions cannabis has also been used to successfully treat symptoms associated with arthritis, sever menstrual cramps, migraines, addiction to alcohol and mood disorders including depression.
